Why do old songs sound like they echo?

You know how older songs, like the 80s, sound a bit like they were recorded in an echo-ful place. How do they actually do it? Of course they like, use less computer effects than we do now. And it seems that a lot of 80s songs sound like they echo in the ambient. It's a nice effect~.
